Cotton Muslin Hop Bag 170 × 230mm - Reusable Hop & Spice Bag for Brewing
The CraftBrew.nl Cotton Muslin Hop Bag is the simple, natural way to contain hops, spices, and grains during brewing - a loose-weave organic cotton bag at 170 × 230mm, sized right for a single hop addition, a spice charge, or a small specialty grain steep. Drop your addition in, close the bag, and it goes into the kettle or fermenter: the muslin weave lets wort and beer flow freely through the contents while keeping the solid material contained — full flavour extraction, none of the mess.
The organic cotton is the point. Most hop bags on the market are nylon or polyester — synthetic mesh that sheds microplastics into boiling wort and ends its life as plastic waste. Organic cotton is a natural fibre doing the same job: completely food-safe at boil temperatures, flavour-neutral, free of synthetic shedding, and fully compostable when the bag eventually retires. For brewers who care what touches their beer — and most who buy organic malt or organic yeast do — the bag should hold the same standard as the ingredients inside it.
Containment pays off at every stage it’s used. In the boil, bagged hop additions mean dramatically less hop debris in the trub — cleaner wort into the fermenter, a kettle that rinses out in moments, and pumps, valves, and plate chillers protected from pellet sludge. In the fermenter, a bagged dry hop charge comes out as easily as it went in, no floating pellet layer to fight through at packaging. And the same bag steeps specialty grains for extract brewing, holds spice additions like cloves or cumin at the end of the boil, and contains fruit or adjunct charges — one simple tool across the whole ingredient spectrum. A practical note for the boil and dry hop alike: pellets swell to two or three times their dry volume, so fill the bag no more than half full, and give a dry hop bag something to hold it under the surface — hops float.
Boil the bag for a few minutes to sanitise before cold-side use, rinse it out well after, and it goes back into rotation — reusable across many batches, and compostable at the end of the road.
